ENCYCLICALS LAUDATO SI ’AND FRATELLI TUTTI FROM THE CHALLENGES FOR THE UNIVERSITIES

Abstract

This article addresses the encyclicals Laudato Si’ and Fratelli Tutti of Pope Francis as relevant messages for education in general and for university institutions. In the first place, the complementarity of these ecclesial documents is described since the care of the common home (Laudato Si') cannot be separated from the care of human relationships (Fratelli Tutti). This complementarity is shown in three aspects: 1) The two encyclicals are presented as open messages to the world that invite dialogue; 2) The documents present a critique of “the throwaway culture”; 3) They emphasize the importance of working for the common good and the dignity of human beings. In a second place, the potential of encyclicals for the educational field will be evidenced. Finally, the challenges applicable to the university level are approached from their substantive functions of teaching, research and community engagement.
