Trust in Chacchoben, Quintana Roo, based on government intervention in the implementation of tourist projects

Abstract

Trust is the subjective assessment of the probability that others will carry out certain actions in a context in which such eventual actions might affect the assessors’ own actions in an uncertainty scenario. The focus was on determining relationships of trust in Chacchoben, Quintana Roo, based on government intervention in the implementation of tourist projects. This qualitative, phenomenological and transversal study analyzed stakeholders’ trust using content analysis. The results show a low and fragmented institutional trust that leads to strategic confidence, which is characterized by superficial, timid engagement. To conclude, the generalized (community) and institutional (governmental) trust in Chacchoben from the intervention of the government in the implementation of tourist projects is eroded. However, there are key elements that could promote solidarity among the inhabitants and provide a foundation to generate trust, such as community support, sense of belonging but that have not been adequately capitalized on.
