Mujeres y Liderazgo: estudio de caso sobre las variables que influyen en el acceso a posiciones directivas en las empresas
Abstract
The number of women who hold leadership positions in companies is significantly lower than the number of men in similar roles. This phenomenon happens worldwide, including Ecuador. However, there are several variables that can change this reality and enable more women to access those leadership roles. Human Capital and Social Capital theories form the theoretical framework for this case study, where we analyzed 140 women who hold managerial positions in the city of Quito and described how they have obtained these positions. Participants in this study were contacted via professional women's networks and the Quito Chamber of Commerce. It was established that obtaining a degree in higher education, holding a membership in professional associations and access to professional networks are essential variables that allow women to obtain leadership positions or to be owners of their own companies. This study also examines aspects of intersectionality related to class and ethnicity, in order to better comprehend who the women who access key leadership roles in enterprises are and provide more insights on how to foster gender equality in companies.
