Abstract

The document proposes an eco-Marxist approach to the socioeconomic conditions that gave rise to the massacre at the Aztra sugar mill that occurred on October 18, 1977 in the cantó La Troncal, province of Cañar-Ecuador. The study deals with two central ideas: the leading role of the Ecuadorian capitalist State and its close relationship with the bourgeois private sectors, and the plantation model and pre-capitalist practices in sugarcane production.

The treatment of these elements is approached from the eco-Marxist approach as it is a contemporary rereading of Marxism that integrates the environmental dimension and opens new spaces for theoretical discussion such as: the dialectical relationship between the finitude of natural resources, the production process capitalist and the state. From this perspective, the specialized literature offers various contributions, of which the economistic proposal of Martín and James O'Connor and the Marxist geographer David Harvey have been chosen.
