Socio-spatial Segregation in Cumbaya

Abstract

Territory in the Cumbaya parish transformed itself due to a rapid urban expansion generated by housing supply and demand for middle high and high socio-economic classes and urban installations of goods and services. Nevertheless, this expansion, more than just being dispersed and inequitable with extreme luxury, with suburban recreation centers and leisure, and others with informality and insecurity, caused socio-spatial segregation among the new inhabitants coming from the north and center north of the city of Quito with sufficient economic resources, facing the original inhabitants lacking the same situation. These original inhabitants could not control the demand for land from the real estate sector, one of the instruments of investment capital.    The theoretical basis is supported by the concepts in the process of capital accumulation in the content of land earned income which permits the understanding of urban expansion in market terminology in the neoliberal context, as well as in the definitions of spatial segregation, with reference to the sectorization of the city based on social homogeneity, which creates micro territories of equals, supported in relations of social, economic, and political power.
